A comforting, savory bowl of porridge made with creamy coconut milk and warming spices such as cinnamon, mace and turmeric. Soft oats and popped black mustard seeds contrast nicely in texture enticing your palette. If you have always made sweet oatmeal porridge for breakfast, its time to give this recipe a try.
Ingredients
½ cup rolled oats
¼ cup water
1 cup coconut milk

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon powder

1/8 teaspoon organic mace powder

¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 tablespoon black mustard seeds
¼ teaspoon asafetida
1/8 teaspoon black pepper, ground
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/8 teaspoon salt
Directions
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add black mustard seeds, cooking for a few seconds until they begin to pop.
Lower the heat to low, adding in the asafetida, black pepper, turmeric, mace, and cinnamon. Mix well to thoroughly combine.
Stir in the coconut milk, water, salt and oats.
Simmer for 5-10 minutes until the oats reach your preferred consistency.
Delicious Savory Oat Porridge is ready.
Recipe Note
This porridge is made using coconut milk to enhance the creaminess of the dish, but you can substitute water instead if you prefer. Tempering the mustard seeds and spices in oil allows for a fuller expression of their savory flavors.
