Pizza sauce is easy enough to make at home and, when you use fresh tomatoes you get numerous nutrients from tomatoes that are rich in phytonutrients like lycopene as well as vitamins and minerals. Use ripe red tomatoes to get a vibrant color in your sauce.
Ingredients
2 tsp. olive or any edible oil
500 gm. tomatoes
-
3/4 tsp garlic powder
-
½ tsp. red chilli powder
-
½ tsp. Himalayan salt
½ tsp. sugar
1 tsp dried oregano or 1 tbsp. fresh oregano, chopped
Directions
Wash tomatoes. Boil water and when it is boiling, put in the tomatoes for 1 minute.
Drain tomatoes and put in cold water. Remove the skin, which will be easy to peel off because of the blanching.
Chop tomatoes finely or put them through a food processor or blender if you want a smooth sauce.
Heat oil in a stock pot or heavy pan and put in the tomatoes. Once they are bubbling, which will take around 10 minutes, add onion and garlic powders and stir through.
Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
When sauce has thickened, mix in the red chilli powder, salt, sugar and dried oregano.
Use as a topping for pizza. The sauce should be enough to cover 4 small pizzas or 2 large ones.
Add other toppings and cheese on the top before baking.
Recipe Note
1. There is a lot you can do with this basic tomato sauce. Thin it down and use for pasta. Add to white sauce to make a pink sauce that you can use with pasta or vegetables. Use with cheese and other fillings in tortillas, wraps, bread rolls, paninis or toasties.
2. You can even use it as dip with any kind of chips or fries. In fact, if you do not want to use it on pizza, you can use the sauce to make open sandwiches, just like pizza. If you have pizza sauce at home, you can quickly use it for your dinner, whether it is pizzas or on bread and save money on ordering pizzas.
3. This sauce will keep for 4-5 days when you refrigerate it. If you are in a hurry, you can use canned crushed or whole peeled tomatoes, which will shorten the cooking time. Don’t have oregano? Use fresh basil, thyme, marjoram or even mixed herbs so that the pizza sauce tastes much better.
4. If you add your favorite vegetables and/or some chicken on the top, you add to the nutrients available from the pizza also.
